On the 27 June there was a tidal surge that affected a long section of the South West Coast. The precise cause is not known but there was an excellent example of crowdsourcing by the local BBC Television news trying to find out people’s experiences of the event and how deep the surge was. The depth varied along the coast with tidal gauge stations showing the anomaly. The mini tsunami was nothing compared to the Japanese disaster earlier in the year but still shows the vulnerability of coastal areas to unforeseen events.

One of the interesting affects of this event was the piezoelectric effects with reports of people’s hair standing on end. Was this a result of an earthquake or other event? It appears that there have been no earthquakes recorded by the British Geological Survey.
Since the Japanese Fukushima nuclear disaster and Germany’s decision to reduce its nuclear output it is, perhaps, worth considering the risk that nuclear power stations present. Typically the likelihood of an accident has been under played. There are natural factors, human factors and technical factors to take into account amongst others when considering the risk of a nuclear leak from a plant. The 12 mile nuclear exclusion zones may also affect a greater number of people.
I attended an interesting Transition talk about a sustainable food strategy on 30 June. The truth is many local authorities are not even considering food sustainably let alone having a strategy for it. That said a number of authorities have managed to create their own strategies and have progressed them really well. Carbon dioxide emissions from most sources, such as through supermarket supply chains, typically have emissions that may be split down by processing (around 50% of emissions), transport and retail (typically greater than 20% of the total emissions followed by agricultural processes (around 18% of emissions). Clearly there are great advantages to be had by reducing transport to reduce the carbon footprint of food. Locally sourced food really helps with a sustainable food strategy.
